‘What ho, old chap! Let’s off to the Oxford Scholar for a pot of God’s amber liquid, what.’ Luckily, things
aren’t this toffy at Melbourne’s quirkiest hotel, the Oxford Scholar. Located at the Sussex-end of Swanston street, this pub proudly harbours the atmosphere of suburban local right in the heart of the city.
Owing to its location, the Ox attracts a fair mix of uni students and city workers, which makes for all sorts of fun.
As evening sets in, the bistro menu offers a few cheap meals to down before you hit the pool table. You can even get a group of mates together and start a pool team. Naturally, the booze selection at the Ox is slanted towards the beer end of the scale. Cocktails can be had at more sophisticated venues down the road; this is a beer man’s pub. Tap and bottled offerings include Carlton Draught, VB, Cascade Light, Pure Blonde, Fat Yak, Peroni, Grolsch Premium, Matilda Bay Min Chips, Mt. Goat Stm Ale and many more. And you’ll want a good amount of beer to go with all that sport.
League, Union, Soccer and AFL all get their day in the sun, with the odd meat raffle thrown in for good measure.
