Our Story
Established in 1857, during the heady days of the Victorian gold rush, The Oxford Scholar Hotel has for more than 160 years served Melburnians at the northern-end of Swanston Street.
In 2019 ‘The Scholar’ was redeveloped, refurbished and re-imagined as a bar and eatery, situated in the heart of the recently transformed RMIT City campus.
With the creation of a series of new bar, dining and event spaces, The Scholar offers a relaxed, comfortable and lively experience for its patrons. We feature a wide selection of both local and international craft beer, while our menu selections are built upon locally sourced and fresh produce, offering innovative, seasonal dishes and pub classics.
Designed with inherent flexibility in mind, and boasting significant increases in capacity, a multitude of functions are able to be staged with the assistance of experienced, attentive and dedicated event staff.
We Love Beer!
We work closely with a great gang of independent Aussie craft breweries to provide an eclectic tap listing that will keep you frothing for more. No visit will be the same as our bar team constantly work on rotating, some of Australia and most of all Victoria’s best offerings.
Whether you're in the mood for a fruited sour, a crisp wheat beer, or a big hazy pale ale, we have your tastes covered. And to make it even better, we offer a selection of affordably priced pints that won't strain your wallet.
We do love craft beer, but we won’t insist on you growing a beard and wearing a trucker cap, so if you just want a pot of Carlton, there’s always plenty in the cellar.

Chic wood paneling, exposed original brickwork with contemporary lighting, make for some serious function space eye candy. We have a range of spaces that lend themselves to a whole host of different events.
Make our meeting rooms your engine room with state of the art tech to power your presentations, followed by a private dining experience. Our function and bar areas are wonderfully versatile, so to accommodate everything from birthday celebrations and wedding receptions, right through to training sessions and seminars.
All of our spaces are without room hire fees, as we would rather you eat and drink your budget, instead of seeing it disappear into thin air.
